The Road to the Shore/Gander

While the Kittiwake Coast has many things to see and do, Gander has continued to be the major service centre for the area. From the industrious international airport to the natural beauty of the Gander River, Gander has become one of the most recognized areas on the tourist trail. As Gander maintains the vitality of a central service hub, Gander Bay South leads one onto a unique journey through some of the most notable beauties of rural Newfoundland found along the Road to the Shore.

The Road to the Shore which is often referred to as “the loop” consists of a rugged coastline that embraces the soul of the surrounding communities and local people. Travels along the shore stretch for miles and begin with the Gander Bay communities - a journey though the Road to the Shore is not complete unless these spots are visited. They represent the heart of the shore. Mysterious shipwrecks and spectacular views of the Kittiwake are what make these communities a must see.

The rugged coastline continues east to where the eye is met with pristine white sandy beaches that stretch for miles and encompass Musgrave Harbour, Deadman’s Bay and the Town of Lumsden. With the waves crashing and beautiful white sandy beaches these communities are a sun lover’s paradise.

While enjoying the sandy beach the neighboring communities that make up New-Wes-Valley offer a unique visual experience. Period costume, historic landmarks and architecture all evoke the atmosphere of a living heritage. It is in these communities that you will find heritage renditions of what existed over 100 years ago and proudly display the pride of Newfoundland.
After enjoying the beauty of Centreville and Indian Bay the community of Dover presents a natural geological wonder known as the “Dover Fault”. While geological wonders play a large role in this community, the Dover Fault Look Out provides an excellent opportunity to view and understand the historical background of this fascinating community.

From geological findings in Dover further east is where the town of Gambo resides. Often referred to as the gateway to the Kittiwake Coast, Gambo is enriched in history and can most notably be recognized as the birthplace of the great Joseph R. Smallwood. The small town is in a league of its own with a natural elegance that is embraced with a historical backdrop.

The Road to the Shore offers an experience of a lifetime. Mysterious shipwrecks, rugged coastlines, and living heritage are all enhanced with a rustic elegance and an intriguing historical background.
