The Road to the Beaches/Terra Nova Park

The Road to the Beaches is full of sheltered coves, sandy beaches and sparkling waters. Travel east along Route 1 from the Town of Gambo and enter the community of Glovertown which is the service centre for the Alexander Bay area. Glovertown is built around a large harbour opening in to a “reach” extending about 30 kms to the open sea. Beautiful scenery and warm hospitality await you. Traveling further onto Route 310, you can visit the small town of Traytown and nearby a causeway will give you access to Culls Harbour with it’s gentle meandering country road.

Sandringham is the first community you encounter on the Eastport Peninsula.  Just a short distance away is the community of Eastport, the hub of the peninsula.  Eastport and the region are famous for its beautiful sandy beaches and for this reason the area gained its name as “Road to the Beaches”. While in Eastport, be sure to walk along the north end of Eastport Beach to see its sand dunes, sea grasses, shore birds, and lazy lagoon. One very worthwhile destination from Eastport is a 4 km drive north to St. Chad’s with its unbelievable picturesque harbour.  More awaits you in Burnside where you will find an archaeological field laboratory for the Bloody Reach Archaeological Site. A 45 minute ferry ride from Burnside will take you to the island of St. Brendan’s which was first settled by the Irish. Call 709-677-2204 for ferry information.

There’s no need to search elsewhere for the “Old Country” accent and genuine Newfoundland hospitality…it’s all right here! Upon returning to Eastport, we encourage you to visit Salvage at the end of Route 310. This community, named one of Canada’s 10 prettiest towns by Harrowsmith Country Life Magazine (2002), is the oldest settlement in the region.

For the serious hikers and pleasure walker alike, the historic “Old Trails” stretching over the hills from Salvage to Sandy Cove will provide a memorable experience. Double back on Route 310 and turn south from Town of Eastport to Town of Sandy Cove where the local beach is one of the finest.  Nearby, a short distance west of Sandy Cove, visit Happy Adventure: The name says it all!

Terra Nova National Park extends along the edge of the Kittiwake Coast. Loved by vacationers and nature enthusiasts, Terra Nova Park offers an abundance of activities for all including camping and picnicking facilities, hiking and nature trails, restaurants, lodging facilities, a golf course, the marine interpretation centre and as well a visitor information centre. While Terra Nova Park consists primarily of camping and outdoor activities, the communities of Terra Nova and Charlottetown offer an alternative to the outdoor activities with a scenic drive through these picturesque towns. Enjoy the natural spring swimming hole in the community of Terra Nova or chat with the locals as you stroll the quiet roads of Charlottetown.
